Fields of Sound Beyond the Studio

IMG_4641

Recently I took the time out to gather a collection of field recordings and found sounds to work with in the studio. I was lucky to have access to a wide selection of field recorders and microphones (being a music technology student has its benefits!). I am particularly interested in incorporating natural ambiences into some of my compositions as a “bed” or pad upon which other sounds can be superimposed.

The work of Sheffield-born sound recordist and musician Chris Watson has played a large part in my recent interest in arranging and combining found sounds with instrumentation and electronics. In the highly insightful interview below Watson describes some of his approaches and techniques when working within the field of sound.
